Abner Loveland Jr. Brighton’s first settlers arrived in the area in 1820 from Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The township was organized in the spring of 1823, The township belonged to Lorain County but with parts attached to Medina County until the organization of Lorain County was completed, in 1824.

As of the 2020 census, the population was 855.
