The Village of Sheffield Lake was incorporated in 1920. It was part of Sheffield Township up until that time. The rural southern part of the VIllage of Sheffield Lake split off of the to form the Sheffield Village in the 1934. In 1960 the Village of Sheffield Lake became the City of Sheffield Lake.

Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City School District operates one elementary school, one intermediate school, one middle school, and Brookside High School.

Sheffield Lake the population was 8,957 at the 2020 census.
